You know sometimes you get these random emails from friends with pictures from fail.org etc. Yep they are great fun to look at for a quick laugh, however sometimes what you need is a dose of education. Today I received this email from a friend who works at Newcastle University. In just a few short minutes I learned a LOT more about 1500 and the origin of some of today's sayings than many years trying to study history at school.
I know it is a strange subject for a technology blog but what the hell, I hope you enjoy and I hope you learn something too.
The next time you are running a bath and for anyone who knows me I love HOT baths and you curse because the water heater hasn't been on long enough or worse it has broken down, just think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s:
Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.
